Re: trans or clutch
My moneys on the clutch not disengaging. Dry overheated clutch bearings can also cause your problems. Do you run wet or dry primary? Good luck.

Re: trans or clutch
Im with the previous answers the men said----I check primary chain adj. Also check clutch settings--assuming you are runnung a chain, also settigs for the springs 31/32 & this is also assuming your steel plates arent warped /check this also. Good-luck 58flh

Re: trans or clutch
Can you put it in Neu. with the motor not running ?
Do you have to move it back or forward to get it to go into Neu. when motor not running ?

Re: trans or clutch
Slightly off topic, but that skinny primary belt they make for old Pans is the coolest thing ever made! Cuts noise by 1/3, cuts regular maint by 1/2

Re: trans or clutch
I think you'll find that the 5 stud hub is nothing but ass-pain.
How much slack is there in your primary chain?
What type of oil are you running in your transmission?

Re: trans or clutch
Some clutch fiber discs swell when warm/hot to the point that they tend to drag. If clutch works properly when cold, but doesn't cut it when hot, I'd be thinkin in that direction....bosheff

Re: trans or clutch
The spring measurement is a good reference, but even pressure all around is ideal. Check the plates for even movement with the clutch. Mike

yeah thats till it breaks we had one go on a realy dangerous bit of unlit duel carriagway with no sholder, you ever been towed on a bike behind a car on a truck type ratchet strap??? it was either that or sit there and wait till a wandering truck wiped it all out,PanJud wrote:Slightly off topic, but that skinny primary belt they make for old Pans is the coolest thing ever made! unfortunatly the bike had it on when we got it

Re: trans or clutch
Yah the downside is you have to inspect it more often than a chain....if the tranny is torqued sideways a teeny bit, it won't last long. I was surprised the first time I ever looked inside my primary (at the THEN chain) It spans a HUGE distance with no tensioner sprocket/shoebadbird wrote:yeah thats till it breaks we had one go on a realy dangerous bit of unlit duel carriagway with no sholder, you ever been towed on a bike behind a car on a truck type ratchet strap??? it was either that or sit there and wait till a wandering truck wiped it all out,PanJud wrote:Slightly off topic, but that skinny primary belt they make for old Pans is the coolest thing ever made! Re: trans or clutch
the clutch is getting hot and the clutch hub is walking on the bearings and effectively working backwards, instead of the pressure plate putting pressure on the clutch pack the clutch hub is as it walks. This is usually caused by the alignment of the engine and transmission.I had very good luck with the tamer for this problem.Basically it is the inner bearing retainer that holds the hub in place when you disengage the clutch.
