Re: Another starting story-Question??
Eric,
With your timing marks aligned, is your timer fully advanced, "fully rotated counter clockwise"?

Re: Another starting story-Question??
G'day Eric s
If you think it might be electrical and the spark looks weak, as you said
try drop your plug gap down a bit to .018" instead of the .025". This will help
with starting.
Hope you get it figured out
Pete

Re: Another starting story-Question??
I am using the beyond2000 unit and my bike would not come close to starting with the time/mark at the center of the hole. For mine the sweet spot is when the marks on the beyond2000 line up like shown on your photo the time/mark has just entered the window.Eric S wrote:Hi again. I have spark- Not sure that it is enough or at the correct time. Here is a photo of the breaker. At the position seen here the time/mark is in the center of hole on compression stroke of the front cylinder. Both pushrods have free spin and the timer is rotated to full advance. The coil my friend has I would assume that it is for points it is the 65? style with the wire hook ups on top and bottom. Both plug wires come out of the front when mounted. Thank you and everyone else here for trying to help me. Eric

Re: Another starting story-Question??
Thank you all again-- Will try again today- All the the new sugestions and will report back later. I tried once this morning and all I got was a belch back through the carb and a faint rumble in the pipes a couple of times. Also it made a huffing sound through the carb as I dont have the air cleaner installed at this time when I turned off the switch. Eric

Re: Another starting story-Question??
ITS ALIVE ! I checked the electronic unit with a volt meter yesterday and it seemed to be doing its job. I set flywheel to rear of the hole however there is a bit of gear mesh slop in the shaft that I did not need to move the advance stud much to get the marks to align. I ran a seperate ground wire from the e2000 unit to a ground. It now does start and will need some tuning. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE TAKEN THE TIME OUT TO HELP! Eric

Re: Another starting story-Question??
I'm very glad to hear that, Eric. Even if I was wrong about the cause.
I suspect the ground had more to do with it than the timing. Ed's web site states that the ignition unit must have a good ground.
The 49-57 Pan manual shows the timing mark just entering the hole as being correct for those engines, but I didn't know if this applied to your engine or not.
Regards,
John

Re: Another starting story-Question??
The only reason for wet plugs is excessive flooding and no combustion at all happening. Some combustion can take place without the engine starting.jdpan wrote:Still no solid reason for the dry plugs..

Seems to me that if he's kicking it 30 40 times, there'd be fuel on the plugs.

Not if it's not getting excessive fuel and it's firing enough to burn it off.jdpan wrote:Seems to me that if he's kicking it 30 40 times, there'd be fuel on the plugs.
Remember that the fuel normally does not enter the combustion chamber in liquid form.

Re: Another starting story-Question??
Sorry for causing excitement- Back to square one. I believe now that my getting it started today was pure luck. I ran a permanent ground for the electronic unit. I rode it for a short trip today as it has been spitting snow. When I returned home I noticed that every now and then when you would blip the throttle with no load on the engine it would spit back through the carb. After it had cooled down. I replaced the aluminum pushrods with the S&S steel ones that I had and went out for the evening. When I returned I made an attempt to start it and back to the same thing. Backfire through intake and exhaust and no start. I pulled the cam chest apart earlier and all marks are in alignment. I removed the cam. A friend brought over a stock H/D cam and I am going to try to rig up something and try to compare them to each with the relationship to the marks. It seems that this or defective electronic unit in the timer is all that is left? Will report back again tomorrow. I feel like a real ass about now not to mention frustrated. . P/s After I came back from the ride it sat for about 5-10 minutes. I kicked it to restart it and on the second kick it started but popped like a machine gun through the carb for a second or so. Thanks for listening. Eric
