Folks,

It seems the term "Rat" can mean anything at all... just like "chopper", "bobber", "show bike", "old school", etc.
Each of these terms rarely means anything close to what it was first applied.

It appears that Bosheff will only accept a garbage pile,
and RROBERT60 demands dead animal parts, even if the rest of the paint is immaculate!

I submit that an honestly ratty machine shows the character and scars of righteous duty on the road, as well as the personal touch of its owners over the years.

Cameras have difficulty with that.

Shifty once told me:
"When you see a real rat, you'll know better."

the Rat Bike people actually have their own organization, and a web site.

That last picture is of Smitty's "famous" rat bike, this close-up picture should show that it has ALL of the characteristics that Cotten just mentioned, so it should qualify.

check out their site.

Mike!

I'm sure there is a Righteous Rat under there somewhere,
but it seems many of us have lost the forest for the trees.

Novelty is fun and all, but it is not the essence of Ratdom.

ok then, a "rat" is a road warrier (or the guy that rides it), its been personalized (not customized, there's a difference). Here's one that shows up at Davenport just about every year, he frequently gets the "Long Distance" award at the show. A righteous old flatty that still gets the job done, it ain't purty but it runs and rides just fine!
