What tool for Sprocket shaft bearing nut removal?

#1

Post by pusher »

Need some assistance. How do I proceed at this point in disassembly? Do I need to buy a $100 specialty tool to get at this thing or is there a clever hack to get it off?

The sprocket shaft extension should slide on/off. Yours probably has oil/sledge holding it on the sprocket shaft. You may have to heat it and work it a bit, but it should slide off.

If its NOT a slip fit look behind the spline, there is a groove there, your small guillotine puller will get in that groove and in conjunction with a 2 jaw or harmonic damper puller will take it right off.I have run into some of these that were pretty stuck.

went at it real good today.. no pullers just gloved hands.
Heat from a propane torch.. couple bangs from a piece of wood
definitely stuck on there.. looks like it budged a small bit.

What's a guillotine puller?

I don't know that a 2 jaw puller could get in there yet.. some blaster in there tomorrow

A guillotine puller is often referred to as a "flank bearing puller" It is what fits in the groove behind the splines. It looks sort of like two letter C shaped halves that bolt together.K&L supply catalog has a good picture on page 56 or if you have an SK tool dealer nearby the part # is 92504.No you probably cant get a 2 jaw in there.

If worse comes to worse, you can wedge a screwdriver behind the shaft extension and pry it out a little at a time, knocking it back toward the engine. You may have to use a hammer to initially wedge the screwdriver in behind the extension, then knock it back with a computhane hammer, or a block of wood and a regular hammer. If you work it this way, it may take a while, but be patient it can be done without ruining the shaft, the extension, or the spacer. Once you get it off, clean the splines on the shaft and extension until it again is a slip fit.

I think it may have sprung from "if push comes to shove", but have no supporting data...Mike

I've always thought it was "if worse comes to worst", meaning if what is already bad(worse) gets to be as bad as it could be (worst).

Or maybe it's wurst? For when it all turns into a big sausage... Like the head off my '52.
