tranny seal replacement
my tranny started leakin last summer.....
but when you mix belts and oil you get this....
BUSTED
when I took out the old seal I found the side to side play on the MGD gear to be about .0035,
what I found was that .0004/.01254 over size bearings where a plug fit, I was about to put in the old bearings when I remembered that I had new STD size/.1250,
so I measure new VS the old and the old were .0002 smaller/.1248
plus the gap at the top of the 44 bearings went from .023 down to .011....
and all my up/down was gone....
.0002 may not seam like a lot, but times that by 44 and it adds up .0088
now keep in mind that this is a circle so it gets kinda hard for me to explain were all of the .0088 went, but it spins free and I checked my old numbers that I had measured out before, and I know I check these bearings when I rebuilt it 20,000 miles ago and they were right at .1250...
kinda a mystery to me.......
good puller
the offender
seal out
new seal and hat
new cork
seal driver

this tool has a shoulder bored into it so that the stud rests on it.this is to set the correct height of the stud

clean with lacquer thinner
clean out old lock tight
feeler gauge to keep seal from getting cut
SILLY CONE
dish in
MORE SILLY CONE
red locktight
checking alignment
RIGHT ON!!
close
red locktight, your friend
less than .002 run out
less than .005 run out
belt drive in line and square
flat and no rock
nylatron liner
new springs, no more slip I hope.....
5/8 cold up and down free play

Re: tranny seal replacement
Nice seal pounder, Home made? I see you have the MDG with the built in seal at the main shaft. I still don't see how the oil is supposed to stay inside the tranny with no seal between the MDG and the tophat (spacer), the only real solution (at least when parked) is keep the oil level low enough so it can't run out the side...Mike

Re: tranny seal replacement
panacea,
i got the same problem of oil leaking out between the top hat and main drive gear. dont see how silicone would help where would i put it? the mdg in my tranny does not lock to the top hat with that "L"shaped piece.it only leaks when parked ,on kick stand. the tranny is a 1978 shovel.

Re: tranny seal replacement
The 4-spd trans was engineered to still have enough oil in it, even if, on it's jiffy stand, the MDG seal leaks down to the crown weir (tipping point) over the case race. They made those cases for like, I dunno... 1936 to.... uhhh....1964. Harley had MDG seal leak problems for 28 yrs. During those 28 yrs., if the dealers complained about transmissions running dry and galling up, then H-D had a whole building floor devoted to engineering out problems. By 1958 their OHV motor was perfected. I think the last "new" part to go in a 4-sped transmission was....uh....like 1941
As long as you can see oil at the bottom of the case, with the bike upright, you're ok.
Looks like a 2" dia. pvc square cut pipe. Saw it illustrated in Vol. 2 Good to see it in practice. Looks like Hylomar® sealant. Clear-blue. The good stuff.
0.050" on the seal inset? JIMS has a tool for that, but vernier calipers will set the depth too. The metal seal edge makes contact (and an indent) into the cork seal.
Nothing like a Panhead.

Dunno. Whatup? Right, right, right.....the 1959 3rd gear and the neutral lamp switch. Still, they got the box wired for low oil by 1941. Let it bleed until it stops, then keep riding it.

Re: tranny seal replacement
I guess I could use some sillycone on the drive gear/spacer since they are locked together with the "L" key, still wish I had the lip seal on the mainshaft...Mike

Re: tranny seal replacement
Great picture tutorial! The home made tools are awesome!
One thing I noticed it looks like you didn't grease the roller bearings? Maybe it's the pics, but they look kinda dry? Aren't you supposed to grease 'em up real good?
