Its not a stupid question but you didn't give us enough information. I am trying to finish a conversion chart that I've been working on and will post it as soon as its finished. The biggest problem with finding the right light bulbs is that there is no chart to tell you what the equivalent standard bulb numbers are for the the harley part numbers or the J&P or Taiwan Tedd or any of the other resellers, they only list their own stock number and it doesn't help much at the local auto parts store.
Here's the scoop on the running lights.
The old DH-49 (bullet) lights when used just for marker lights or running lights use a #63 bulb for 6 volt and a #67 bulb for 12 volt.
If using the bullet lights as turn signals you need a higher watt bulb: #81 for 6 volt, #89 for 12 volt.
If you are talking about the passing lamps (spot lights) here is the conversion for those:
#1321 or #1323 for 6 volt, #1327 for 12 volt (these are the triangle shaped bulbs with the flange and 3 slotted grooves to mount them)
All of the numbers I gave you are standard numbers for GE, Tungsol, etc., bulbs. You will have your best luck finding them at a good old fashioned auto parts store, like the locally owned mom & pop NAPAs that have been in business for years. I try to stay away from the Autozones and O'Reileys which usually are not much help.
hope this helps

Hey Mike:
Do you know the number of the proper lamp for the speedometer for 6V?

Re: my next stupid question
Andy,
Its the same as the OIL or GEN indicator light for the 47-57 two-light dash, H-D part # 71090-47 with the tall tubular glass bulb. You usually see a lot of those that have been replaced with the small round #55 bulb because those were a lot more common at the local parts store. The correct bulbs are a LOT easier to remove and replace in the dash because they stick up far enough to grab with your fingers, in the speedo can the extra length makes it light things up a little better than a #55.
Now I'll bet you want the generic equivalent?; for 6 volt its a #44, for 12 volt use a #1891. The most common automobile use for those bulbs was in radio dials.
