1949 WL - Exhaust Mounting (Sealer?)

#1

Post by 1962300 »

Does anyone like to use anything to aid in sealing exhaust pipes for leaks when mounting?
Or just mount them & ride?
Thanks!

Old time method: paint pipe & port with maple syrup, will carbonize in place.
Never tried it.

It will probably smell good for the first couple miles, too.

What Rubone said plus use a pipe expander to obtain a snug fit if you don't have one.

Expand the pipe carefully, the rear exhaust port is very fragile and easily broken.

They would drill a hole into a cylinder or a head fin and attach a spring to it. And then take the exhaust pipe and weld a washer to it, and hook the spring to it. The spring tension would keep the pipe pulled up into the exhaust port on the cylinder. I’ve had it like this with a couple of bikes. I’ll look for a picture
