As can be seen from the photo, the pin/ wedged plate sits under the ballvalve.
I'm interested how that pin can prevent a ball from doing anything at all...

The pin prevents the anti sump check valve from blocking the relief port when oil flows, and the plate prevents the pressure relief ball from blocking the port that allows pressure reliefed oil to vent to the passage to the cam chest. Lots going on inside that pump.
