Re: Linkert problems
Any radial motion of the throttle shaft is an air leak. The shaft should turn smoothly without any wobble. Either the shaft, the bushings, or both need R&R. If the shaft was really loose, there may be a scar inside the throat where the disc closed in the wrong place, not really fixable.
As awander said "M35 has a 1-1/8" venturi, while the M74B has a 1-5/16" venturi. The M74B would have been stock on your 1953 74ci motor". The M-74B is a generation better than the (older) M-35, it's the most modern of big twin Linkerts.
Perhaps this is the time to replace the M-35 entirely, rather than invest money in it.

Re: Linkert problems
Andy, I'm aware he's working on a Linkert. I brought up the S&S to suggest that attacking the bushings or anything to do with the throttle shaft fit on any carburetor is something that needs to be done carefully and to very close tolerances to avoid worse leaks or binding, etc.

Re: Linkert problems
The last $&$ B I reconditioned simply need a new throttle shaft to be back in the game. But Jim is right, replacing the bushings and align boring them is a job for a milling machine, and a knowledgeable operator.
A Bendix/Zenith has replaceable seals at the ends of the throttle shaft so that fit is not nearly as critical, and those carbs are longer lasting, no?

Re: Linkert problems
Nigel,
Just a thought……
Do you gave the collar, low speed needle, installed under the needles spring, against the carburetor body and it is not wallowed out?
I think that in the basement a have a M-74B bare body, condition unknown…..
I will look for it, perhaps we can make a deal…..
I am looking for a set of panhead rocker arms and bodies (front and rear head).
In Germany
Look to see that the washer is in place and fits the needle

Re: Linkert problems
Haven't done it myself, but sizing the bushing has been done with a reamer passed through both.

Re: Linkert problems
If the bushings are fairly well-aligned to begin with, then a regular hand reamer will work fine.
If there is any alignment issue, though, you really need a reamer with an extended pilot the size of the unreamed hole, so that you can line up the reamer to both bushings at once.

Re: Linkert problems
M-61 is late EL, 1-1/8" venturi, unique main nozzle; IDK if the throttle disc angle is different.

Re: Linkert problems
More modern, handles mixture quality and air correction differently, similar to M-53, M-74.
The venturi and nozzle make it a poor choice for a 74.

Re: Linkert problems
Nigel,
Sorry it’s been so long for me to dig out the carburetor body.
It’s not in as good shape as I remembered it,
Apparently it was on a bike that got into some kind of a accident,
Manifold mounting ears are bent, and it’s cracked thru the body.
You don’t want to mess with it and try to repair it..
Sorry I was not able to help you out as I wanted to.
Keep looking, one will show up for you.
George
