Linkert problems

It’s ok when standing but when I take it for a ride and open it up it starts popping and banging as though the timing is out but I’ve set that up correct with a strobe light

If the timing setting works with the S&S, there is no reason why it would need to be changed for the Linkert.

There has to be a problem with the Linkert or the manifold.

Check the ignition switch. This happened with me. The bar and or base on the ignition may be worn down causing the bar not to make contact with the base. Try moving it to the lighting position and riding it again. That's how I found my issue. The bar may just need to be rotated to get to a good spot that is not worn. I don't drive my bike much at night so that position is in better condition.

I've had the same ignition switch problem-but I wouldn't expect it to depend on what carburetor I had installed.

That’s what I’m thinking if it runs with s&s got to be carb there is a bit of movement in throttle shaft wondered if that would cause this problem ?

Well, there needs to be a LOT of movement in the throttle shaft-after all, it needs to rotate basically 90 degrees from closed to fully open.

But you may be talking about a different kind of movement? Please elaborate.

Hi awander I mean the throttle shaft has a slight wobble in it when you grab hold of it

If the shaft or the carb is worn, it could be letting some air leak in.

Does that carb have shaft bushings?

You could try spraying a little 2+2 gum cutter or throttle body cleaner around the throttle valve, main jet and around the intake at idle to see if the rpm's rise.
Can you close the choke a little while underway to see if it's a fuel issue?

You mentioned some play in the throttle shaft. Have you measured how much?

I just rebuilt the M74B for my bike last month and the shaft play was a little over .005" loose. Ran OK, but not great.

I rebushed it and it runs much better now.

Tapped old bushings with M7 tap


Pulled the old bushings


Installed the new ones


Sized to .001" loose


All done

Hi i haven’t got the tool to measure the play in shaft so don’t know how much but there is a bit of movement , did you tap the old bushing so you could pull it out ?

Wear around the throttle shaft is a common problem with S&S Super B's. The deluxe rebuild kit provides two steel bushings, but you really need to get them in there exactly aligned and square with the body. Not something to be done with a drill press. More like with a Bridgeport. I found just replacing the throttle shaft eliminated the air leaks. Is that something you can try?
