24703-40 seal ring spacer
would anyone happen have a one of these spacers that I could get some dimensions off of? Putting a motor back together and it was missing from the pile of parts.

Re: 24703-40 seal ring spacer
Thanks. I started looking at all the ebay listings and the first bunch of them were just drop shippers and didnt list any dimensions, so I stopped looking. Should have looked a little longer huh !!!

Note that the Eastern part may have similar dimensions but is nothing like the OEM part which is merely a strip of sheet steel formed in a circle. It is open ended so they often end up crushed or twisted in a box of parts and often get thrown away. They are not bearing surfaces, more of a light stop if the gear moves a bit. There is no endplay spec either. They just float inside the spring. Interesting engineering.thepigstye wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 12:35 am Thanks. So all the pinion gears from 1940-50? slid onto the pinion shaft and were free to move back and forth, but in 51 they became a press fit?

So beautifully defined, succint, and vivdly apparent.

Close, the floating gear was used from 39 to 50, pressed gear arrived in 51.So all the pinion gears from 1940-50? slid onto the pinion shaft and were free to move back and forth, but in 51 they became a press fit?
The spring pushes the pump gear and pinion gear apart, the spacer goes inside the spring.

Re: 24703-40 seal ring spacer
Sure, I got all that. So from 1940 thru 53, the same spacer and spring were used. Just trying to figure out why if from 51-53 the pinion gear (and all aftermarket pinion gears for those models that I have seen) are a press fit, why would the spring and spacer even be used? Did the oil pump drive gear also press on in 51-53?

From 51 to 53 The spring pushes the pump gear and seal against the case.

Re: 24703-40 seal ring spacer
so as far as the pinion gear that presses on goes, the face of the gear sits flush with the splines on the pinion shaft? I have a few different manuals that over the gear, but none mention how far the pinion gear is pressed on.

Re: 24703-40 seal ring spacer
Rubone says : Not sure what manuals you are looking at, but every one I have ever seen puts the face of the pinion gear 5/16" proud of the case face, same distance a factory installation tool puts it.
Thats for the flatheads. If the pinion gear on a Knucklehead head sticks out 5/16" out of the case, the cover will never go on. The pinion gear bushing and boss sit proud of the cover already

Put pump gear on end of spline, install cover, remove cover, that is where the pinion gear goes.the cover will never go on.
