quick question

Waiting on shim for my 45's transmission case swap. As far as the kicker shaft seal, do I put it the bushing and force it on? this feels very tight, or do I just put it on the shaft and let it squish?. Thanks

I have found that the aperture in the bush is too small for the seal & if you do force it into place it is so tight that the kickstart shaft is extremely difficult to rotate !! Before installation , I put the bush in my lathe & bore it out by .010". The seal & shaft then fit neatly & allow the shaft to rotate.

I like to use 2 o-rings instead of the standard seal.
I use #017 or harley part#11117 o-rings.
Apply some o-ring grease and install the 2 0-rings on the counter shaft.
Easier to install side cover, seals better than the standard seal, and doesn't restrict movement of the counter shaft.

couldnt seem to find a #017 at the store, Ill ding some up or Ill grab the harley #. Heres another question, when i just sit the guts in the case and put the door on the see if it all spins good. It doesnt seem like the kicker gear or cluster has an issue cause when I spin the hub all I hear is ratcheting and the kicker wants to move?? tried the new springs and starter gear aswell as the old ones?

Without timing the gear to shaft and getting the kicker gear trapped under the bolt heads it will ratchet and try to move the shaft. Are the tripper bolts in place and good? The location is set by the kicker arm and cover stop. See the manual.

I put the gear and spring in by hand, spun it behind the tripper bolts. Trippers were in the case I got, looked ok. I do have new ones. fat lug facing 6 o'clock which put the kicker upright lined with bolt slot? I thought this is correct? Ill peek at the book again. counter gear/shaft just seems very tight for an un-adjustable setup

so what should I be looking for if I cant tighten up my mainshaft end play? I have the .113" shim in, the reverse gear and a washer. still well over .010" end play. have a newer gasket in too so its pretty thick also. pulled the race. looks like maybe .059 of a lip dont know if thats worn down. Do I put in the new clutch rods seals/spring in while taking my end play? Also on this reverse gear, does the washer go on the shift dog side or against the race? no of this info is in the little gray book I have. thanks

Agree, spun/chewed taper is a likely reason for lost end-float, tapers pull up further than originally intended.
But I wouldn't consider 0.010" too much end-float, the only way the oil can get to working surface of that bush and shaft, is via the end-float (and any grooves that may be in flange).

I would at least lap your sprocket to shaft, which will make it more reliable and maybe eliminate a few thou end-float.
You may then need a thinner washer or spacer,

ok thank you both. I do have a new race and thrust washer for that side coming. Ill start eyeballing mainshafts. I wish I had my dial indicator but bet my plays a lot .010 is deff a modest estimate.

who has the best replacement shaft?

I stand corrected, MoCo calls out .003" to .005" and they have various thickness washers to achieve same.

For reason stated I would stay away from .003" and further ensure rear of sprocket has clearance when fully installed

Many 45 mainshaft side play issues are at the clutch gear bushing being worn allowing the shaft to move too far into the gear.
