40-50 Knuck con rod rollers

#1

Post by thepigstye »

I've looked for a few hours on eBay and Google trying to find rollers to fit the 1940-50 rod cages with no luck. Book says 3/16"x .344 and .694. All I can seem to find is the 1951-54 rollers which are a shorter length. Does any one sell the right rollers for the 1940-50 cages?

Also, I just installed a new "Jims" crank pin. I noticed that the shoulder on the journal doesnt sit flush with the inside of the flywheel ??? On either flywheel. That cant be right , can it? It fits the tapers perfectly.

Part numbers & pics help
Is pin much below flush under nuts?
Is assembled width between wheels close to female rod width? or way bigger?
Could pin be an over-length version intended for well used flywheels?
Why not use later cages? the old ones are probably worn anyway.
Never heard of an AMCA judge splitting cases & flywheels.

part # 9341 on the long bearing and 9361 on the short. The reason for using the bearing is that is what came out of this motor. If I can find the rollers, Id rather use these cages. Aluminum cages suck Jim's box doesn't state "oversized". I'll post some pics shortly

Page 111 of the pan head service manual explains the change and reasoning. I don’t think you will find the earlier slightly longer rollers and while you can use the later slightly shorter rollers in the 40-50 cages it is best to use the 51 and later cages.

I'll look around today to see if I can find the correct rollers, if not, does anyone here have a good set of original 51 and later cages for sale?

I know this will never work, better call Jims and see what they got to say. The cages and the female rod are taller than the crank pin. This set of flywheels were together with the old original pin, guy ujust wanted to replace the crank pin and shafts with new Jims stuff.

so does anyone has a set of 61 flywheels with a factory crank pin laying around? Is there supposed to be a big gap between the end of the journal and the each flywheel? Just wondering. Never remember seeing any harley crank pin installed and you can still see the taper.

Always a gap on the stepped pins.

As Rubone said , there is a gap with the stepped pin.
The steel cages & rollers are exactly the same thing as the big twin Flatties.
V Twin & Jims used to stock these rollers , std. and all oversizes !!
Cheers , Flatboy.

Think about it a minute. If the pin bottomed against the flywheel how would one know the tapers were tightly/properly seated? Thus, that is the reason for the gap. Make sense?

when you install a normal non stepped crank pin in a flywheel, you dont see any of the taper. What is the idea behind only the stepped pins showing a portion of the taper?
