#1

Post by Hogey »

anyone know the size or even better seal number for the Colony nut motor main shaft seal. Wen i purchased the removal and fitting tool from Colony i asked for a replacement seal for there product i got no response i guess they sell as a unit only.

Motor has sprocket shaft. Main shaft is part of transmission. Which seal are you looking for and what year shovel?

Tedd's V-Twin lists the seal as their part number 14-0177 for 1955-69..
And then 1970 and up is another part....
That seal comes one each, check with your local indie dealer or on line....

You should be able to search the seal by dimension.

Maybe I'm a little late to the party, but is this seal something Colony made for the aftermarket? My '68 has the motor sprocket shaft bearing retaining nut (requires the special tool with the two dowels) and the spacer here. Nothing more on the sprocket shaft except of course the Timken bearing assembly and the sprocket.

Colony's piece is an AM upgrade best used if going to a belt or tin primary. The OE setup didn't care if oil leaked past the sprocket shaft into the primary as the system sucked the oil back into the engine. Mine leaked badly into the primary case and is why I went back to the recirculating system rather than running an isolated & flooded primary. My '68 is happy with that now....

roo i will run sealed primary i have wet clutch. i have the tool made by Colony. and the Colony Nut has a seal in it.( 24031-55 colony.) it is the same as HD OME no. Fits 55-68 big twin. V Twin sell a 5 pack seal kit that Roo put me onto. Imported. The Dennis kirk 42x54x4.5 measurements as advertised seem wrong as the sprocket shaft spacer 24029-55 would measure more than 42mm OD i think ? living in Oz the V twin kit is $$$ thats why i was after the seal size to buy from my bearing shop in my town. off the track now! i got a early kicker cover. Pig Snout. made in US by S&S that i a will chrome to match chrome cam cover. the kicker cover uses a full bronze bush with a seal at the end of cover to my amazement the shop had 1 seal in stock.

Hogey...
I went to Tedd's and looked up that seal, 14-0177, and you are right, it is a 5-pk, but the price was so low that I assumed, there's that word again, that it was for only one. The 5-pk retails for $15.38, or $7.69, dealer, now that is cheap.
BTW, with the recirculating primary lubrication, I can keep the Scorpion clutch dry, and also not drop a bunch of oil on the ground when I have the P cover off...

The Nut was rounded at tool fit holes. The tool to tighten should have 4 pins. The nut seal had no spring. Have ordered new Colony nut & 5 pack Vtwin seals as per Roos part no. What is the torque for the nut? Also it is holding the timkens and the later models is 150lb but you would never hold the tool in nut with those little pins fitted in tool. The manual says tighten ? Edit. Just realised the sprocket shaft nut torques the Timkens manual says 100ftlb am i reading correct . The flywheel is S&S complete 4 3/4 stroker so should i go higher ftlbs ?

The seal's spanner nut, left hand thread, only functions to seat the races in the case, and I don't see it requiring an excessive amount of torque to adequately perform that task. My factory 1959-69 service manual simply says to tighten the Sprocket Shaft Bearing Nut. The OE piece is staked in place from the factory once seated .
