Fender struts

#1

Post by Excalibur »

My bike which was previously re-rego'd as '83 and was possibly someone's idea of imitating a WideGlide has cracked fender struts. It has been cobbled together from leftover parts, repop etc so I don't always know exactly what I have. I believe they are 59932-58 which do from '58 till '76 FLH given they have 5 holes plus extra afterthought holes..
Fender is bob type and looks like it's been on 3 or 4 other bikes in its' life. Struts have countersunk holes.
Scouting around I find four different struts through Shovelhead era: 59923-58, 59929-73, 59961-80 or 59932-77
59923-58 or 59932-58 seem to be the same so one must be a typo, book says the latter.
Questions:
What part number do I have here for struts?
What will otherwise fit?

Most likely I'll simply replace struts with exact repops of what they are but as freight can exceed item price I'd like to get it right 1st time.
Thanks for any help

OE FL long struts with flap hole & countersunk holes are 58up.
I'd have to look at parts book to tell you when FL changed to plain holes.
I see the poxy flat bar compression brake stay.

We have FL, FX, and FXWG fender struts. The FX-FXE, Superglide, struts have an offset to fit to narrower fender. They are also available with or without holes for turn signals. Otherwise, they only have two holes for fender attachment.
Same for the FXWG struts, except they are straighter to fit the wide Duck Tail fender, same width as for FL fenders.
The FL struts have three fender holes from 1958-'76. And the have a different part # for 1977-production. About that tine the MoCo went to one piece fender, no tail gate....
And that's all I could find out on the matter.

Roo i just purchaced repop 58 to early 70s and the holes did not alighn to OME FL 68 fender correctly and As im using tapered head bolts the LHS strut was a bigger tapper hole. Junk and postage to return from OZ not worth it. So i am rechroming my origanals.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the pointers.

Have studied the subject some more and I believe these part numbers tell the story:

OEM # 59932-58 fits 58-84 FL FLH.(5 hole)
OEM # 59932-77 fits 77-84 FLH.(7 hole)
OEM # 59929-73 fits 72-84 FX
OEM # 59961-80 fits 80-86 FXWG.

If I'm understanding correctly, the 5hole and 7hole will fit. Even the FXWG would work but fender hole pattern is different.
