UL front end questions

#1

Post by Pete808 »

Have been enjoying the UL this week but have noticed that the front end has a bit of a wobble at higher speeds so I decided to take it apart and rebuild the star hub and also wanted to diagnose the rattling from the front end springs. Do you guys know if the inner springs are the same length? On my EL the bottom ones appear to be a few inches longer and there are two separate part numbers which makes me think they are different but when I do a parts search on eBay for example the only ones I can find are the same length but different part numbers, I think the ones I saw from BlarneyRubble on eBay are 3.75 inches long or something along those lines. Referring to the parts circled on the diagram part # 46057-30 and 46058-36 Does anyone have a set of the bottom inner springs for sale by chance #46058-36, I'm trying not to buy the complete set since I only need those two. Second question is regarding the shock on the springer, how do I know if it is worn out beyond use? When i compress it, is it supposed to spring back? Mine does not, I can compress it but then have to pull it apart since it does not spring back on its own.

Thanks everyone

Vintage shocks are only dampers and have have resistance in both directions , or in one direction only. Only modern gas filled, pressurized with nitrogen, shocks rebound back to extension on their own....

The inner springs should be different wire diameters with the bottom being heavier than the top. They should also have a built in curve along the length to make them fit tight to the rods and not rattle.

I was wondering why they were bent looking, that makes sense.
