The Panhead is all back together, all the little stuff buttoned up. Get some gas in her - cross fingers, kick. Backfire - keeps backfiring on the kick - a little smoke out the carb. What the heck? Ok - out of time - I will check the timing next.
Later I realize I have forgotten what I did 6-8 months ago at the start of this adventure - the Distributor is set fully advanced, because in troubleshooting before the tear down I was checking the timing. Doh!
Getting old is a bitch.

Re: Getting old is a bitch.
The engine should start with the timing fully advanced, as long as you kick through and don't let it kick back at you.
Retarding the timing before kicking will mostly prevent kickback.
But, the engine should start just fine either way.

Automatic advance, actually, auto retard, was implemented to save the inherent kick back from destroying the electric starter system, same thing for cars & trucks.....

Re: Getting old is a bitch.
I got her to start - am very happy, but all four pushrod tubes are leaking oil from the middle!
I let it run, leaking, long enough to get the oil warm enough to drain, but all four pushrod tubes leaking really has me stumped.
I THINK the oil is coming from the bottom, but I was so anxious I didnt verify that - I have to change the oil filter and refill the oil to be able to start it again and look at the leaks more calmly and analytically.
I put new corks top and bottom and left the blue silicon middle seals alone.
oil pressure is 40 lbs - same as before that drops below 10 lbs once it warms up. Only parts that were changed out were the Cylinders.
