Linkert on 84" pan ?

#1

Post by wagon man »

I'd like to run a M74 on my 65' pan but it does have a 84" s stroker kit in . I've been told to run a S & S Super E . I don't need a hot rod and I'm seriously thinking about putting it back to stock 74" and putting the stroker kit in another motor and building a chopper . Dream big right ! But for now I need to to make the 65' run . What cha think ?

80 inch Indians run Linkerts no problems even with performance mods. Not sure what the specs are for jets etc but speak to some Indian folks or get a linkert off an 80 cube Indian with Bonneville cams etc.

My opinion is you can run a linkert M74B (most common) with no problem. My pan is about 81 inches with an Andrew’s J cam and runs, and starts great. Linkerts have adjustable main jet, adjustable idle jet and will tune right in if built properly. If you have to buy one, be sure the Venturi and throttle shaft bushings are not sloppy.

“Through the Wilderness” sells fully rebuilt units and parts. I love a Linkert on a pan for one main reason, leg clearance! It’s the only carb that hides between the cylinders and keeps things narrow.

Again my opinion, but if you try the one off your 58, just try the carb, buy another manifold. Getting the manifold set up with no leaks can be trying and no sense messing up your 58 for the price of a manifold. They are cheap and abundant.

First off, an 80" Indian would have used the smaller 3 bolt 1 1/4" Linkert similair to the M51 and M88 that was used on the Big Twin HD sidevalves. Now, a long time ago there was a book called Custom Chopper Cookbook which talked about using the earlier M35 1 1/2" with a M74b venturi which was slightly larger. The M35 had an adjustable main "big needle" and no fixed jets like a M74b. The M74b used a jet and the "small needle" was intended to be a "trimmer". I'm thinking the M35 with a small jet and big needle might be the way to go. Any thoughts from the Linkert crowd?

The adjustable bits of the M-74B are not jets, but needles; the main jet is replaceable with any other Linkert main jet.
The M-88 is WLA 45", no SV big twins.
The main jet size for a 1½” 4-bolt carburetor can be estimated by dividing the displacement by 11,000. The square root of the result is the main jet ID. This will not be the correct size, but close enough to use for a test.
By this formula, the stock M-74B #19 main jet should be about .082", which is the actual factory size.
For an 84" engine, the formula returns .087", larger than any factory jet but between a #44 drill (.086") and #43 (.089").
This will only approximate the high speed mixture, other functions such as the mixture curve will need separate mods, in particular the main nozzle.
