Clutch basket hub nut size // broke down in Utah
My buddy is riding his 67 shovel to sturgis. His chain broke and messed the ratchet top cracked in two. We need to take off the basket. What size is that big nut inside that holds the basket in? Side of road right now. Going to take it apart tonight thanks

How do you intend to pull the hub after you get the nut off?

Possibly a steering wheel puller could be adapted to pull the hub. But what then? Even if you get to the ratchet top, you don’t have parts to fix it or weld it. Tough situation.
My advise is send a partner to the nearest U-Haul and rent a van. Load up and go ahead to Sturgis, once there, you now have a shelter and garage to work in and parts and talent are available there to fix anything. Your wallet will take a hit but at least you can salvage some enjoyment from being at Sturgis bike week.
Good Luck

I have a spare ratchet top back at my shop in LA. And someone will ship it out. In the meantime. He’s going to pull the trans out. Probably rent a jaw puller in deadwood. Our buddy we stay with in deadwood is a later welder. So it’s possible. We are worried the transcase might be damaged. We won’t exactly know until it’s pulled. Thank you for the advice.

If you put a jaw type puller on the hub you will likely destroy it, you need a plate type to pull on the studs, not the flange.flatheadDave wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 10:47 pm I have a spare ratchet top back at my shop in LA. Generally when a top gets broken like that the case is broken as well. Good luck with it, hopefully it is repairable.

Good luck with it all. If the funds are available a whole trans may be available in Sturgis if it comes to that. Glad you got off the side of the road.

Might be a good idea to (in the future) replace the main drive gear outer race and line hone it piloting off the main shaft bearing, or line hone the existing one for oversize rollers, since the damage and welding are right in the bearing area.flatheadDave wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 6:51 pm He finished welding it this morning. Looking again at the picture I see the orientation flipped. Never mind the above comment. Your damage is nowhere near the mainshaft.
