Parts Catalog Issues - Wrong Numbers

#1

Post by DeltaElite »

Today i planned mounting my buddyseat but unfortunately had to stop, since important parts were missing.
I collected all the Numbers from my 1958-1968 OEM PartsCatalog (#99456-68)

There it says that the #52602-58 Stud for the spring mount is to be fixed to the 52581-58/52582-58 with #7725 Nut 5/16-24 FlexLock.
Well, unfortunately #52602-58 has 3/8-24 threaded ends and of course a 5/16 Nut won't fit.
Does anyone have another parts catalog which shows the correct # of the nut to be used?

Also, Bolt (#4 in Parts List) #3996 is shown as 5/16-24 x 7/8 Hex Bolt. But 7/8" is too short to fit through the bracket (30), the spacer (42) and the spring (26)
Does anyone know which bolt would be correct?

Thank You.

One thing to bear in mind is that the H-D parts books are replacement service parts, and not necessarily what was on the original production machines. Also said catalogs often do not list obsoleted parts, so the newer a catalog is, further away from the days of that model's production, the more likely certain parts will be absent.

Stud # 40 is 3/8". Perhaps you have the wrong stud?

I have a 1962 FLH so the 58-68 PartsBook - seems to me most fitting. Found the same wrong numbers in other partbooks.

The Stud is NOS and has the correct part# on it 52567-58

my reprint 58-65 book shows spring mount stud as # 42 for 58-64 for 5/16 -24 flex loc
stud # 43 for 65-* shows as a 3/8 -24 hex
#5 seat bolt 4304 3/8 24x 7/8 hex. hd
#24 bracket 52551-36 41-64
#6395 washer 3/8 x 13/16 x 1/16
#14 7045 lockwasher 3/8
#19 7789 nut 3/8-24 x 1/4 x9/16 hex
all exploded view i see no spacer you are talking about on seat mount thru t-bar i have a original 61 and those are in correct order and have had both book and motorcycle for over 30 years now and use this parts book for research and guide for any work i may do, would only trust stud in your possession if in came with a sticker part number orange and black or in bag orange and black with -58 hope this helps

It would not be the first time that the 58-68 parts catalog was found to have a mistake. My re-print 58-68 gets used and abused with dirty fingers, But for the final word on my mid to late 60s bikes, I have tended to rely more on the 60-70 catalog, as it seems to have corrected many of said mistakes.

Yepp, you're right. I mixed that one up. But the other part as well had correct Sticker on it. It came wrapped in brown paper.

I have the red parts book.

@panhead_kicker Do you have a number on the 60s-70s catalog?

Looks like this is made out of unobtainium.
What does the 60-70s catalog say in regard to 52602-58? What nuts are associated to it in this catalog? 5/16-24 or 3/8-24 ?
