Need a new oilpump
Hi
I need a new oil pump for my Panhead -52 which I run with solid lifters (..in case that has anything to do with it).
Best of all would of course be if I could find a complete NOS pump -52 but since that most likely are impossible, the second best (i think) is a to buy a Reproduction-pump. I want to keep the original style
I've seen that W&W are selling these and they have two different models...
- 62-006 https://www.wwag.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects ... %21WW26614
- 62-007 https://www.wwag.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects ... %21WW26615
I can't figure out/understand the difference between these two. For the -006, it says "without rotorvalve"...what does that mean? Besides that, is it only the look of the cover that differs???
Anyone with knowledge of what Pump-upgrades Harley did over the years...what works and what doesn't?

Re: Need a new oilpump
The "rotor valve" pump is mostly a knucklehead pump though it was used on the very early pans which didn't have the difficult oiling system that knuckles have. Get the one without the rotor valve and let us know how it goes.
A lot of pans have been upgraded to the '68 later aluminum pumps which provide higher pressure but aren't as bullet proof as the earlier iron ones.

Re: Need a new oilpump
My question is why do you need a new pump?
Is yours cracked and leaking oil?
No pressure?
Wet slumping the engine cases?
You can get nos parts for the pumps by searching the net.
Springs, gears, shafts, check balls, all readily available, JWBoon in Holland is a good place to start

Re: Need a new oilpump
You mean I should go for the "-006 pump" and not the "-007 pump" even though they mention that the -007 pump is for OHV Big Twin 1950-1967...any particular reason?...just curiousLittle Stan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 10:04 am The "rotor valve" pump is mostly a knucklehead pump though it was used on the very early pans which didn't have the difficult oiling system that knuckles have. Re: Need a new oilpump
The reason is lack of pressure....even though the adjustment screw is all the way in. Yes, I know Pans is all about flow and not pressure ... but I want to ensure I get oil up to the rockers at all time. Most likely leakage between housing and drive shaftGeorge Greer wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 10:29 am My question is why do you need a new pump?

Or your gaskets are too thickElectricmayhem wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 10:52 amThe reason is lack of pressure....even though the adjustment screw is all the way in. It took me a few minutes to find that the adjuster screw should be adjusted to 3/8’s of a inch down.
Is having it adjusted to where it is bottomed out too much?

Re: Need a new oilpump
You could also run run Shovelhead drive gears, bumps up your oil pump speed 20%.

Will they fit in the pump chambers? I thought they were deeper (73 and up).Tunglegubbin wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 2:29 pm You could also run run Shovelhead drive gears, bumps up your oil pump speed 20%.

Re: Need a new oilpump
He is talking drive gears (in the timing chest) not driven gears. And the gear size within the pump began with the aluminum pumps in '67.Mongrel505558 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 3:13 pmWill they fit in the pump chambers? Re: Need a new oilpump
The later pump has larger feed/supply gears: .380" thick vs. .250" thick.
The faster pinion gear set is for 1954-* engines, S&S (?) makes a set for early engines but $$$.
