My barn find story

#1

Post by 70 servi »

In the early 90s i was looking for an FL that a working man could afford, probably a project. I had a few almost deals, and luckily I went by the: "if it ain't meant to be... "
In April of '92 I was on the phone with a friend and she heard my story and she knew of a bike about 50 miles away. Long story short: 1979 FLH-80. 151 miles. Parked at 1 month of age.

Wagon Man- I resurrected it and put a ton of miles on it, left it mostly stock including the giant air cleaner, then ordered an EVO and sold the shovel. Regrets? We all have em.

I had that giant air cleaner on my 1981 80 ci Low Rider. Ugly as hell. Wish I still had it to put on my wall, though. I'll bet a lot of those got chucked. In those days all I saw everywhere was teardrop a/c's with S&S behind them.

Aw it was really a great experience. Barn find of a lifetime, and i thought about showing up at the original dealer for its 500 mile service. I ran the original goodyear speedgrips for a while, no dryrot, until a friend convinced me to replace them. Ive only seen one other with the same paint and seat, but the paint had no flake like mine. Mine looked like it had a gold flake. I never saw my bike again even after moving to its new owners general area. Probably not original anymore.

Found the old air cleaner, knew it was here somewhere. I'd intercepted this as it was headed for the melting pot. That was sacrilege so it had to come home with me. Funny to look at these now, we used to slag these off, "someone bolted a vacuum cleaner to your engine"!!

My first Harley was a 1981 Low Rider with one of those air cleaners on it. Had a black decal saying "80" on it. That and the Keihin carb behind it were soon changed to an S&S Super E kit with teardrop A/C. Wish I still had that bike (my friend does, though) and I wish I kept it stock. Nice Commando motor propping the piece up. Wish I still had that bike, too.

Yeah it gives new meaning to "Toaster", I still had the plastic fins on mine, and btw I'm really digging that lonely EVO sitting there...
