What is actually happening
When a bike pops and then doesn't start, or when it's between hot and cold, I have found that two clicks down on the choke with two kicks throttle closed, followed by a starting kick throttle 1/4 open, choke still down two clicks, almost always starts mine, as well as most bikes I've ridden. Any ideas as to what is actually happening to cause this to work?

You don’t mention your advance/retard, or whether any kicks are with ignition off, or if your ignition is stock or electronic or magneto.
So what’s happening is youare sensing what your motor needs, a formula which it’s accuracy is modified by the number of beers consumed in the last two hours! A scientific fact!

Re: What is actually happening
How much priming can occur with the with the throttle closed? Timing is retarded, ignition off for the first two kicks, standard timer, timing and gaps.

Re: What is actually happening
Some thoughts re Linkert starting:
Sometimes it can be just the right amount. The way I see it is: when throttle is closed, there's very high vacuum at the low speed port. Opening the throttle just a tad means there's more low speed port exposed to vacuum. More air will be drawn passed the throttle butterfly too of course but if it's pulling fuel and air in at a usable ratio, all is well.
In your example you have added 2 clicks of choke which enrichens the low speed circuit. Just a matter of time before a rider works out what the engine likes and under what conditions.
