HD-33443 tool discussion

Post by Excalibur »

Heard about this tool and then found it in the '78 - '84 manual.

Does anyone use it? or is centering the play of the screw holes by eye sufficient?

Thanks for any tips,

What's it for? Lifter blocks? If so, I've never used it and have had good results.

If it was only in the ‘78-‘84 manual, then the thread likely is not 1/4-24 and not useable on older engines. The early blocks had taper screws and holes, the later had regular cylindrical holes. I believe that tool is called for also on Twin-Cam cam plates.

I'm not sure what year they changed, but earlier lifter blocks had counter sunk mounting holes which automatically centered and squared them during mounting. When the MOCO went to non countersunk mounting holes that tool appeared, it's used to center and square lifter blocks. As far as threads go the the countersunk were a fine thread the non counter sunk were coarse, Building an engine from parts you can order a hardware kit through the aftermarket to mix and match the lifter blocks.

I use it on the later motors, not sure if it helps anything but for the cost why not use it!

Thanks for the great tips and snippets of info. Installing lifter blocks is at least a couple of weeks away, and once parts arrive.

After resting the topic for a spell, I had an idea. As the tool merely centralizes the lifter block on its' 4 screw holes, a countersunk allenhead capscrew would achieve the same result.

1,1/4" x 1/4"UNC

Intending on using this when the time comes... then fitting a set 12pointers as pictured.

From my experience the tappet blocks fit with little play. I think you would only need to use the allenhead screw to locate the first 12-pointer for each of the two blocks, if at all. Are the case threads 1/4-24 or later 1/4-20?

Case threads? 1/4-20.
Tool 30c.
My first thought is to loosely fit 3x 12pointers, lightly seat capscrew, then nip the 3x 12pointers. Remove capscrew replacing it with 4th 12pointer. Torque them. Done.

That works.
