1968 Shovelhead
Had to drag my '68 out of the garage to access the Evo for a little outing today....

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
I know you really like the Dyna shocks. In what ways are they better than the Konis?

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
They sure as hell ride a lot better.
The Konis are so good that they have been discontinued for about 20 years.
These OE H-D Shocks, with the nicely cast top eye, ride like on a cloud, really nice.
I find them on eBay in the $100 range. a lot better than the Konis, or the Progressive 418s I have tried also, and are no longer serviced by Progressive, so their warranty is Null & Void, NFG/DOA....

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
What dyna Shocks fit a stock 68 with round swingarm mine are 13 1/2" with stock primary covers so i dont want to damage with the chain hitting the inner with a 24 tranny sprocket

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
Some Dynas use 13" shocks, but I can't vouch for their suitability for a round drum brake swingarm application, only the rectangular disc brake SAs....
A 24T transmission sprocket works just fine, but avoid a 25 as a loose chain may fly and contact the starter housing and the front two stud bosses....
Pictured is a 5-speed in my otherwise stock configured '68 FL drive train....

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
Hogey...
I also have an E-start, ratchet top, 4 speed with a 24T sprocket mounted, laying on the floor if you would like a picture of that.

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
Do not try to use 13” Showa air shocks off a late model on a round tube swing arm.
I did that on a 58-64 chassis and even with 50 psi, they bottomed on minor bumps. Fit correct oem and no problem.
It’s the angle of the dangle.

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
Way less work to change out the rear sprocket to get the ratio you want and solves clearance issues at the tranny

Re: 1968 Shovelhead
The transmission sprocket is not difficult to change when doing a rebuild. And unless one has a disc brake out back, changing rear wheel sprockets is pretty much out of the question.
I have never been dissatisfied with a 24T transmission sprocket. Unless one has a heavy bike with an underpowered engine, I stand by my recommendation.... But then, I have never operated under those conditions....
