Engine Number

My engine number is 49FL135## if the new models came out in August 1948 what month would mine have come out ? Did they start at 00000 or 1
0000.

They made about 12900 panheads in 49
49FL13000 to 49FL13900 were likely built in July and August 49
The factory did not use ## in vin numbers

They always started at 1000 or 1001. As stated that was a very late production '49.

Serial numbers for 1949 Panheads began at 1000 and I’m aware of some around 137## but they may not have reached 14000.

But does your serial number look authentic (factory-stamped)? If you’re not sure what the characters normally look like you could post a partial photo. Also what do the belly numbers look like? And is there anything stamped on top of the cases near the rear mounting bolts?

Because you have a 49 I’m also interested in whether the front end is original and if so, is it a Glide fork or springer? Thanks.
