I already know about timken style conversion cups for using a 45 -7/8” springer in a big twin frame .

I would rather use the ball bearing cups so that I can keep the stock 45 crown nut on top. I really don’t like the look of the conversion kit on a more stockish looking bike.
Is there any inherent problem with using the 45 cups on a big twin panhead frame ?
Also is there anyway to identify O.E.M 45 cups from the aftermarket , would really like to stay away from that as well.

Because of machining differences and the length of the steering head 45 cups do not work on a BT unless they are sleeved to fit the larger bore of the neck, and a 45 top nut does not work as it is too long (45 necks are shorter consequently needing a longer nut). There are complete ball bearing conversion kits for using a 45 springer on a BT which preserve the look of OEM.

Stock 45 cups are the same as K-Model and Sportster all the way to the '70s. There are lots of originals around but like I said, they don't fit the bore of a BT frame.

I’ve only seen the Timken conversion style. Do you knoe who sells the ball bearing kit or a part number ?

Thanks guys I ordered the whole set though I really wish there was some other option than Teds. I just know I’m gonna get finger-blasted by this set-up somehow when I go to put it in.
I could have just sleeved an original set of cups but I can’t justify going through that at this moment . It’s not a restoration just a short chop with mostly original H.D. Stuff on it.
Have to pick and choose my battles.

Anyone know the internal thread size for the steering neck of the 7/8ths springer ?
Didn’t get it into our tap chart yet.
If you don’t know , when I find out I’ll post it up.

So , after quite a long delay here it is !
Internal threads on a 7/8” springer steering damper are 5/8th-14.
Just finished chasing it.
