1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
Hello & Happy New Year....
Working on final assembly for the transmission rebuild.
The male threads on the Main Output Shaft are not as clean as they should be.
Ordered a new Nut & it threads on a turn & then doesn't want to proceed as it should feel.
Does anyone sell the Harley only thread chaser Dye; so I can clean up the shaft threads?
It is 3/4-18.
Thanks!

Is that right hand thread, or LHT as found on the big twins?

Re: 1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
It is a right hand thread.
Now I'm trying to confirm if it is....
3/4-18
OR
11/16-18
The Nut is part #8010.
Now upon further research me thinks its 11/16-18

Give these folks a spin they have them
https://www.westtool.com/search#/catalo ... 2024%20tap
https://www.westtool.com/catalogue/product/652694
the stuff I have bought from them was good stuff & prices are good , another place I like to deal with is
https://www.msdiscounttool.com/catalog/ ... 2F4+24+tap
they used to be if it all fits in a flat rate box that's all ya get charged for on shipping , not shipping for each item

Re: 1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
If the threads aren’t too buggered and the nuts are relatively available, cheap, you can make a “poor man die”. By making a cut axial through the a spare nut, spring it open with a screwdriver, or wedge, then work it on the thread using the cut face to clear the offending part of the thread. Time and patience works wonders. A die is likely to be expensive.

There are 3/4-18 taps and dies on eBay for a wide variety of prices..a search pulled up 129 items.

Re: 1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
Thanks all.
The nut I bought is 11/16-18; which I now assume the Main Output Shaft threads to be the same.
(versus the 3/4-18, that I initially thought I was playing with)
So yes...
I see Die's all over eBay.
Easy enough!
Thank you !

Re: 1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
A caliper and a thread pitch gauge would answer a lot of questions.
Now is it right hand, or left hand thread? Please tell me as I'm not a 45 person....

Re: 1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
It is a 11/16-18 class 5 right hand thread. The class 5 thread will make the nut very tight as it goes on.

Re: 1949 WL - Main Output Shaft Sprocket Threads
I have confirmed, with a pitch gauge, that it is a 18 PITCH.
BUT....
Can anyone confirm if it is 3/4 versus 11/16?
Thanks

The previous poster, R Camp told you. He is probably the best known restorer/rebuilder of 45 transmissions in the US and supplies virtually every vintage racer with services.
