Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
Hello, does anyone have any idea how to fix the rivets to the fiberglass cases? Spring clips, hinges, etc. What is the name of the tool for this? Thanks Markus

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
Now I have attached a picture of the parts I would like to attach after restoration of the saddle bags. I have no idea how I can attach the rivets.
Has no one an idea which tool I could use?
Thanks
Markus

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
I use standard stainless steel pop rivets which are totally incorrect, but, hey, they work and are cheap. For a rider they are OK, but you'll surely get gigged big time in an antique judging event....

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
Yes sure normally I would agree with you but these saddle bags costed me too much time to get them free from crack’s and to paint them new. Only for this reason I would like to use the original rivets for the brackets.
But I have no idea how I get these rivets fastened
Thanks Markus

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
Do you have the rivets in hand. If so, how about a picture?
Are they "semi tubular" rivets?
I may be able to help....
V-Twin has the tool and three different length rivets in stock, now.
But you ain't gonna like it..... The rivets are zinc finished, not bright/chrome....

I would imagine you would just peen them over from the inside.hdmarkus wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 10:15 pmYes sure normally I would agree with you but these saddle bags costed me too much time to get them free from crack’s and to paint them new. Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
The V-Twin tool is a C-clamp looking affair that flares the end of the rivet while supporting the head. When dealing with fragile repaired fiberglass and the metal hardware, two pieces are fragile pot metal castings, one must be careful with handling and supporting these items, or disaster surely will follow.
If these rivets are the semi tubular variety they must be the correct length for the amount of purchase necessary, and mushroom flared from the inside outward. I set similar rivets on WW2 US GI helmets with a special bit in an air hammer at low air feed, and it can be tricky. I have about a 5% failure rate. They must be drilled out and a new rivet used....

I worked on us army helicopters and I have a hand held “C” squeeze for installation of solid rivets, with assorted rivet sets,
I will take a picture of the tool and if you want to, I can let you borrow it to fix your bags
PM or email me if you are interested
I would think that JWBoon in Holland has NOS rivets

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
I’ve used that tool on the rivets on my bags after they were painted. I did use pop rivets on the clips on the bottom of the bags that clip onto the rail supports. Nobody sees those however.

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
I think I will do the same. It’s too complicated to get the original rivets on the bottom fastened.

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
I bought the kit from vtwin but I didn’t use the rivits as it was pretty difficult. So I bought really small slotted head bolts and used locktite and lock washers and nuts. It’s worked fine for me. With that c tool, I don’t see how you’ll be able to actually use it where the rivits are way down to bottom of the bags.

Re: Fiberglass Saddlebags renewal of rivets
Dave ya can’t.
It’s useable just for the lid’s and the side plates
To get the bottom ones in, ya need a rivet gun and a bucking bar.
Or use pop rivets and a dab of sealer to make it water resistant.
Simpler using pop rivets if you don’t have the proper tools for riveting
