Sportster Aternator? WTF?

Frankenstein, can you help me understand/....
Found on eBay....

I asked the seller: "Alternator? Looks like a standard generator with a Cycle Electric end cap, no?"

This seller replied:
"it is an alternator.
We dismantled it from a Harley Davidson XLH1000 Ironhead Sportster.
The year of manufacture was from 1978-1985.
The model year is from 1980."

Is he way off base, or is it something I have no clue about?
Frankenstein, can you help me understand....

this is an alternator for Sporster models

,the one you showed is a an aftermarket Generator with a Cycle electric regulator bolt-in the back of the genny...
