Are there differences in panhead frames from 58 to 64?

A few, mostly very minor. And of course date codes and the advent of the security code on the neck from '62.

Ron, was there something in particular you were concerned about? In his 37–64 SE Palmer addresses some minor differences but something I don’t see in that book is mention of the first type of format for the upper rear forging number. Palmer includes photos of 47645-58 but I don’t see anything about the earlier format which was 476 45 58 as per this example.

I don’t have any of Donny Petersen’s books but I read parts of them online. He says 58–61 frames have a ‘small cast-in marking on a rear down leg’ that will distinguish them from 62–64 frames. But he also says it is not a reliable indicator. The markings I know about on D-G lower rear forgings are 47653-58 (outside left) and 47651-58 (outside right) and they were not only present for 58–61 but also for 62–64. Some lower rear forgings appear to have a marking inside but I can’t tell what it is. Maybe that’s what Petersen is talking about?

Thanks Eric, my project is a 63 and I have been thinking about trying to get a stock frame for it, and I might as well try an get a 63 frame if I can. It's slim that I'll ever do that but I think about often enough to ask. Thanks, Ron
