There's a pic of a '68 at the top of the shovelhead section. If it's yours, could you respond to this question? I have a couple questions about the scheme. thanks.....Omar

Who's ever it is, it sure looks good
Paint plan for mine is Birch white with black panels & lines
But what is the question about 68 paint scheme?
Nifty

Re: photo
I've seen descriptions of the black paint, and it states that the paint is "wrinkle". Is it really a textured sort of paint, where you can see and feel the wrinkle, or is it merely flat black?

Re: photo
I remember when those bikes were new and I was hanging out at the local dealership in Lexington, Kentucky. The bottom half of the tanks actually being wrinkle painted, but of a very fine texture. It was still rough enough that when wax got on it the white residue tended to stay and stay.

Re: photo
Yep definitely some sort of texture/wrinkle black, which was an old industrial finish for instrument cases and the like, but re-invented in the late 60's, I think VHT may have been the first to put wrinkle black in a rattle can and instantly every kid became a custom painter.
I really like the 68 paint, not for the wrinkle, but the geometric style which when done right closely follows the tank profile and more importantly the angles of the emblems/badges. Except for the very intentional point at rear, no converging lines is what makes it pleasing to the eye (mine anyway)
IMO That orange bike in the pic has a perfectly proportioned 68 paint job, some others are off and just took terrible (often badly positioned emblems, probably on AM tanks is what lets down a flawless 68 paint job.
I'm not aiming for a 100 point restoration so will probably opt for practical and easy to live with gloss and clearcoat for maximum durability, but I'll try real hard to get the proportions right.

Re: photo
Just to show a rare variation, here is a '68 factory paint job as done on the 3-1/2 gallon tanks. Not nearly as nice a look.

Re: photo
Wow, thanks Rubone, I've never seen one of those before, foolishly assumed both size tanks had same style, the completely wrinkle black lower half matches Roodog's memory perfectly, but jars my eyeballs.
Makes you wonder what they were thinking.

Re: photo
Looks like I'll opt for just flat black. Imagine trying to explain to a painter that you want a very fine wrinkle black put on! I wonder if the judges at AMCA have calibrated fingers so they can judge whether the paint has the correct amount of "wrinkle" to it!RooDog wrote: ↑Fri Oct 15, 2021 6:55 pm I remember when those bikes were new and I was hanging out at the local dealership in Lexington, Kentucky. Re: photo
One can get wrinkle powder-coat.
Wrinkle paint is tricky stuff to apply as both thickness of the application, the dry time between coats (don't let each coat dry too much), and temperature affect how the paint swells as it dries affecting the wrinkling process. It tends to steak if not done properly. And getting two tanks to turn out the same and match is a real matter of luck.
Powder-coat half the tank, and then paint the rest is pretty much a sure bet.
But as the old painter told me, "You can't see but one side at a time."
