Sideplay on star hub

#1

Post by Mark44 »

This particular star hub is on my 48-ish Panhead, but since these hubs are used on a variety of bikes, I decided to post in Gen. Topics.

Palmer (2nd ed.) says the hub endplay should be .003 - .005".
The Panhead Service Manual says .005 - 007".
My Clymer Panhead Manual says .005 - 007".

Does anybody know why Palmer gives a lower range for sideplay than what is in the Service Manual?

Thanks!

BTW, I didn't find anything in the KB that discussed this discrepancy.

Its .003" - .005" in OE SM 40-47 pg 148, available to download on this site.
Don't know what OE Pan SM your using, but as years went by, a lot of MoCo specs got looser and looser.
Not to say .007" is wrong, or that it might somehow steer you into a tree.

I quoted from the '48 - '57 Service Manual, which says .005 to .007". I also have the '40 - '47 SM, which has .003 - .005", which you wrote.

There are some hub rebuilding threads in the knowledge base if you are interested, not sure if it is still there, but Big-Incher (Tom) did an article on his hub rebuild that was insightful, It was hosted over at caimag, but they must have dumped everything when they pulled the pin...

I looked at most of the KB posts that talked about hubs, but didn't find anything about the .003 - .005 vs. .005 to .007 discrepancy on sideplay.

I saw the post by Tom Johnson (BigIncher), but didn't follow the link to the CAI article, thinking that the link was dead following the demise of that site.

Anyway, I found my sideplay to be .007, so I'm going to stick in one .002 shim, and that should get my wheel back into spec.

Thanks, all.

That sounds like an appropriate thing to do.....
