1991 80" EVO tappet guide bolts

#1

Post by neilw »

Is there any way to rig something up to undo the 1/4 " 12 points screws on my tappet blocks ? 5 places today only have 6 point, and i'm running short of options . I do have a 12 point wrench but it will only work on the outer ones. I even thought of cutting it up and welding it into a suitable socket, but it's a bit of an overkill.

Do you have a Home Depot in your area?

Thanks , I have several Home Depots near me, that's about the only place I didn't think of.. The 12 point used to be popular when I wanted 6 point . Now it seems the opposite .. ..
BTW I wouldn't bother undoing them , but I can't get the lifters to stay up when replacing the cam.. The paper clip thing didn't work for me .

Neil,

When I changed my cam on my panhead, …

I used heavy duty rubber bands to hold the lifters up.

Pull the lifters up as far as they can go and wrap the bands on tight, they will stay there.

With the Evo's recessed lifters you need magnets to hold them up. Here's a set listed on eBay.....

There are others available too....

George although I'm working on an EVO engine , I adapted your idea to work great , the bottom of the tappet guides has a wide slot that the rollers go up into, that left enough room to put your elastic band into the slot and it holds the tappets up, problem solved ( after 2days of frustration) I tried to attach a photo but it wont let me ,maybe I'll try it in a post instead of a reply .. Thanks buddy !!

Thanks RooDog, they would be perfect.. I used George's suggestion with rubber bands and it's great .
