There are only two places it can be, either the first place you look, or the last, everywhere else is just wasted effort.
But, you are 100% correct, it will remain hidden until you score a replacement....

Got a Bendix sitting on my workbench. Just rebuilt it, but the float hinge spring launched itself into somewhere else and I haven't been able to find it (until I buy another one - then I'll find it).
I hate it when that happens. Even though my hearing is shot, I’ve gotten pretty good at listening for where some small part hits the floor. I usually find it. Helps to keep the floor clean. You’re right though. You’ll find it after the new one arrives.

I try to set up some kind of "containment berm" when I'm working on something with small parts, and I keep a magnet handy, but this sucker got away. Too small and light to hear, too.

Unfortunately there is often a lot of looking between the first place and the last. Sometimes you just have to walk away, after you find yourself looking in the same places.

I managed to get the stock air cleaner with the correct insert. I did modify the backing plate to work with the S&S carb. I also used the enrichener from a S&S B.

Well Done, Looking good ! ! !
A well tuned $&$ carbby often does not need the enrichener to start except maybe when cold in "leather jacket" weather....

Looks great! That's what I want to do ultimately for my 68. So much else to do, first. Just finished with the wheels. Found a good used complete original wheel with Kelsey Hayes rim and factory mid star hub, and I laced up the other wheel with a good used Kelsey Hayes rim, factory mid star hub that I got from a member of this forum, and bead blasted Buchanan stainless steel spokes. Ground the "B"s off of 20 of the spokes before blasting. The heads of the other 20 are covered by the brake drum. Now I just have to strip the whole thing down to the frame and paint that and the swing arm. Then I can concentrate on the finer points like the air cleaner. Do you have any pictures of the modified backing plate?
