#1

Post by Diesel10r »

So having trouble finding pics of the rear stand catch on a 45. original owner had the wrong catch and the holes dont match the 1 I got?

Also where do I mount the brake pedal return spring, got 1 with my new strap and cant seem to find a point to attach it.
Thanks! sorry for the novice questions

OEM or reproduction rear fender? OEM or repop stand catch? And correct for 45 right, Big Twin are different. OEM are pre-drilled for the stand catch, it goes underneath and depending on which taillight you have may or may not use one of the same holes. Here is a pic of an NOS factory fender. The very bottom hole is the key as the lower hole of the catch fits it and then the rest line up.

The pedal return spring attaches to the little bracket that should be riveted to the side strap.

thanks, rear fender is aftermarket. So it does use the lower tail light screw to mount as he had it set up? its a tombstone light .yes its a 45 catch, it had a big twin. And Ill have to look at my strap, pretty sure the only thing riveted he had the brake switch mounted to.?

Yes, with a tombstone the lower hole and stand catch both fit there IF it is the correct stand catch for '47 up with the very top hole.

The brake switch does not go there, the spring does. The brake switch goes on the rear strap mount and uses a long pull wire to the pedal.

Also, if you have the other part that usually comes with a switch (commonly referred to as the pull) on a 45 it goes on the rear brake rod to use as a brake lock for removing lug bolts. It is used as a brake lock on Big Twins as well but in a different location.

putting my switch on after the pipe install. kit came with this, is it fir the switch spring or how does it lock the brake? tried to find pics but when blown up it pretty unviewable. I had seen that clamp in 1 pic for the switch? can anyone clarify? Thanks

Look at my pictures again. See the location of the clamp with wingnut on the brake rod behind the rear header? It is clamped randomly where it does not contact anything and nothing is attached to it. To use it as a lock it is loosened, the brake pedal applied, and the lock is rotated so that the ear hits the chainguard mounting bolt head, then it is tightened keeping the brake engaged therefor allowing the rear lug bolts to be loosened.
It is not used as a brake switch pull on a 45. If your "kit" did not come with the long pull wire that goes directly to the pedal you will need to make one.

it said wl, wla and servi but this is what I have. So when you apply the brake where does the lock rotate too? the spot in your pic is just storage spot per say.

The lock doesn't "rotate" to anywhere, it is just riding back and forth on the brake rod. If needed to perform as a lock, then YOU rotate it to where it needs to hold the rod.
