1991 FXSTS Springer trip odometer reset screw

#1

Post by neilw »

Tonight I removed the odometer knob and and screw # 67117-85 . I'm scared someday I'll strip the head and the screw driver will just spin.
I use it for a gas gauge ,and reset it at every fill up.
I removed my tanks tonight and this little screw is so delicate it has me worried that someday I may find the head striped and my screwdriver just spinning .
While i have things apart I'm hoping for an alternative besides using that microscopic little screw .
Has anyone thought of a different way to fasten the odometer knob in place ?
Thanks , Neil

Just take time to get ahead of a potential disaster.
I have no problem with that tiny screw. I keep a dedicated screw diver and a spare knob with an extra screw in my tool kit.

A different way, yes, I did. I didn’t like the looks of the plastic knob or cad stem. So I found a brass knurled stem from something, in my junk. Drilled and tapped it to a blind hole, 4-40 I believe, then loctited a long Allen set screw into the knob only. Screwed it in place and it tightens whenever I reset.

It's a very tiny metric screw for that year model. Harley part number 67117-85.....
Tapping it to #4-40 will leave you with a bunch of drill chips, and no salsa....

I just talked to a guy who had a stripped screw in his odometer knob, he merely crushed the plastic knob and went to the dealer and got another complete with screw .
Why didn't I think of that ?
