1965 big twin steering damper
What length spring fits the duo glide/electraglide steering damper? I have a nos one that appears too short to accomplish any tension.
What am I missing?

Yep, So now that we are on the same page, there are two springs. Which one do you not like?

Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
Please explain how the short coiled spring provides tension when the damper knob is tightened.

Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
Can't do it.
The spider spring does all the work. I don't see that the little coil spring does anything, I don't use 'em, I toss 'em, and every thing works just fine.
BTW: The MoCo says not to use the damper except with raked trees and a side car. and I agree with that....

Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
The coil spring fits under the spider to keep it from rattling when not under tension.

Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
Thank You , Robbie, I never thought of it that way, the parts books always have it misplaced, and I've never seen anything in any service manual, have I missed something there?
Mister Knowledge, AKA Bruce Palmer, book 1, seems to say otherwise, placing the coil spring between the spider and the cover, and I went with how I understood him, making no mechanical sense what so ever. Your description, on the other hand, I can agree with....

Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
I always wonder why my spring under the steering damper knob did not do jack squat! Now I know it really belongs under the spider!RooDog wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 3:15 amThank Yu , Robie, I never thoufgt of it that way, the parts books always have it misplaced, and I've never seen anything in any service manual, have I missed something there?

Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
Just an FYI: factory steering damper for glides, with the following instruction sheet. Number 7 on the diagram is the spring in question on this thread (46751-48). It is shown compressed. Its position is the same as shown in the parts catalogs, which is above the spider spring, not below.panhead_kicker wrote: ↑Sat Sep 26, 2020 3:31 pmIts a good day. Re: 1965 big twin steering damper
Now that I understand the correct position of the coil spring ( 46751-48 ) to be on top of the spider, it also acts as a 1/4" spacer. You can get more downward force on the spider, without the knob being so low as to begin cutting into the aluminum fork cover underneath as you turn it. With the damper loose, it will still maintain light pressure on the spider, to prevent rattling, as suggested in this thread.
