Starhub bearing surface forged ? Pan51

#1

Post by Raytag »

Hi,

I think I checked every thread in the KB , every book I could find (ie. Vol 3 shop dope , Knuckle manual) but couldn`t find anything
Palmer first edition (page 98) mentions the stamped spoke flanges and the later type hubs to be forged (the drive side)
Hmmm
Is the complete hub forged and the bearing surface reamed afterwards ?

Thanks
Ray

The hubs are assembled, heat treated, and the bearing surface ground to finish dimensions. They can be repaired by Hard Chroming the bearing surface and regrinding to specs. There are also repairs done by machining them oversize and pressing in a rod race to renew the surface, however that also makes the hub thinner in some areas and can compromise strength. And than they can also be converted to Timken type roller bearings again involving machine work. Lots of options, none are simple.
