Wire Routing Help
I am in the process of putting my 65 FLH back together. When I rewired the bike in the early 70s I used plastic coated colored wiring with the heat shirink tubing so routing the wires was a simple process. I am taking it back to a more stock configuration and I am using the cloth wiring with the cloth looms. I have the relay mounted as well as the directional lights.
And yes I understand that the use of a relay and circuit breaker are not a "stock" item for the 65 but they were part of the bike when I purchased it in 1970 and they function as they should, so they stay.
I need some help in routing the wires though...
1. There is a 2-wire loom for the rear directional signals that goes from the rear of the bike all the way to the front electrical panel under the nacelle.
2. There is a 4-wire loom that goes from the rear electrical panel (under the downtube for the seat post assembly) to the dash.
3. There is a single wire loom that goes from the relay to the front panel.
4. There is a two-wire loom that goes from the voltage regulator to the generator.
5. There is a single wire loom for the oil pressure gauge to the dash panel.
That makes 5 separate wire looms the have to get from the back of the bike to the front of the bike.
Right now I have the 4-wire loom from the rear electrical panel and the 2-wire loom for the directional signals running along the backbone of the frame and under the seat post T in order to get to their respective spots. With luck I might be able to get one of the single wire looms (thinking oil pressure switch loom) under there as well, but that still leaves 2 looms (voltage regulator to generator wires and relay switch to front panel wire) that I have no idea how to route.
Pic of regulator and relay mounted. Circuit breaker is mounted under the battery tray, right rear corner
Hoping that someone with a 65-69 model can tell me or show a pic of how the wires should be routed (or someone familiar with how the wiring goes)

Dave, here’s some shots of a ‘69 FLH. Hope it helps. Let me know if you need more.

Re: Wire Routing Help
The correct wire lengths point you in the right direction most of the time. Unfortunately I cant find my excel spreadsheet that had this information... Ive got several photos of my 69 I can share also.
Yes 4 conduits run under the seat bar...

Re: Wire Routing Help
I couldn't get all those wires under my seat T. Heres how I did my 1969 FLH

Re: Wire Routing Help
Appreciate all the responses with pics. I too am going to have to route a couple of the looms that will not be under the seat post.

Re: Wire Routing Help
Its up to you of course, but the stock routing for 4 of those conduits (in 69) went under the seat tee. If you use the correct conduit (loom) diameters, they all fit. That includes the starter relay loom.panz4ever wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 8:29 pm ...With luck I might be able to get one of the single wire looms (thinking oil pressure switch loom) under there as well, but that still leaves 2 looms (voltage regulator to generator wires and relay switch to front panel wire) that I have no idea how to route.
The voltage regulator to generator does not. It should run down low behind the pushrod tubes, along with the ignition circuit breaker loom.
In case you're interested, the overload circuit breaker mounted here underneath the battery carrier:

Re: Wire Routing Help
Using the correct size looms but damn that sure makes it a tight fit.. I am using the overload circuit breaker as you have in your pic and guessed (and got lucky from looking at your pic) at its position.panhead_kicker wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 8:36 pmIts up to you of course, but the stock routing for 4 of those conduits (in 69) went under the seat tee. Would you mind posting a pic of the 2-wire loom from the voltage regulator to the generator please?

Re: Wire Routing Help
FYI the third loom is for my side car, and I don't think stock went that direction.

Interesting that you mention the hack. I too am adding one to the 65 along with a 3+R tranny set up. My fender has the light on top but I have yet to get around to the lighting for it. At the very least I have a pic of something I can start with.

What Panhead kicker showed. Looms running behind PR tubes to timer and generator.

Re: Wire Routing Help
Rather than starting an entirely new thread I am going to extend this one in a bit different direction.
This is about the wires rather than the wiring. As I am going thorugh and adding cloth covered wires I find I am in need of the pieces that go on the end of the wire where they go into a socket.
Looked in the parts manual and there is nothing listed for these. Not even sure what the heck you call the copper piece on the end of the wire.
Anyone have a source they use for these parts.

A "good" auto parts store. They are generic.Anyone have a source they use for these parts.
