Hi community,

how do you measure the engine rpm? Has someone a tip for a tool?

En electronic tachometer is the easiest. Three wire hookup: + to battery, - to ground, and the third wire to the points / trigger side of the coil. A Shovelhead, Sportster, or Evo tach will work just fine with any 12 volt ignition. You can use it as a hand held testing tool, or mount it permanently on the handlebar risers. I use them on both my Evo and '68 Shovelhead. A mechanical cable driven unit may be used with a stock distributor if you still have one on your bile. I have the parts to do that set-up if anyone wants to buy it....

Try this one, it counts the peaks in the line to the spark and calculates the rpm. The brand name is Voltcraft A-200. It is a Multimeter too and able to measure voltage, amperage and resistance beside the rpm thing.

What are you trying to achieve Markus?
I think for some adjusting reasons it would be good to know the rpm of the engine. I only would need a handheld measure tool. I will have a look to the Voltcraft A-200 which is mentioned by dontsink….
