#5 stamped on Left side case??

#1

Post by PanHunter »

I’ve got a pan motor here I’ve been working on and there’s a number 5 stamped on the front left side of the case, I’ve never seen this before and was hoping someone could shed some light on it. Not sure if it a re stamped aftermarket case or if there’s a chance Harley actually did that. Any info would be great. Thanks

Most likely an inspectors stamp. It is an H-D case.

Interesting, was it a common thing for them to use the inspection stamps? Ive just never seen on like this before. Thanks

It was stamped in the factory after passing inspection.

PanHunter, my best guess is that the 5 may be an inspector stamp. Apart from some 58FLs I’ve also seen it on the following engines: 56FL, 56FLH, 57FL, 57FLH, 58FLH, 59FL, 59FLH, 60FL, 60FLH, 61FL, 61FLH, 62FL, 62FLH, 63FL, 63FLH, 64FL and 64FLH.

Other numbers I’ve seen in that area:
2 on 56FL, 56FLH, 58FL, 58FLH and 59FLH
6 on 61FL and 65FLH
9 on 64FL, 64FLH, 67FL, 67FLH, 68FL, 68FLH and 69FLH.

On a certain 62FL the number was applied horizontally so I’m not sure if it was meant to be 6 or 9.

I agree your case is H-D. Because it’s FL you may find a certain type of 7 stamped on top of each case near the rear engine mounting bolts.
At the back of the cases you may find other letters and/or numbers although I haven’t seen many of them.

Just out of curiosity, do your belly numbers begin with code number 1 or code number 3? Thanks.

Sorry for such a late response been slammed at work. Thank you for all the info. I've now noticed a few recently with the inspection stamp. Many it was just something i looked past previously. To answer your question though the belly numbers do start with a 1

Thanks for your reply. Most 58 Pans have BNs beginning with code 1 but I have a few examples starting with code 3 and they appear to be authentic.
