Front fork drain leak FLH

#1

Post by Holtvintage »

I recently rebuilt the front forks on my 1982 FLH. I put in new Colony brand screws and the new copper washers that came with the screw for the drain holes. It seems that after adding the oil both the screws leaked. I tightened both screw but didn't want to get stupid with to torque. One seems to have stopped but the other still leaked. I removed the screw and drained the oil. Inspected the screw head, washer and the fork surface and nothing looks knicked. Just wondering if someone else has experienced this and a remedy. I have another new washer, maybe hone on the fork surface. The sliders were recently chromed.

have no idea if the re-chroming has any influence, but could be. Gasket goop,/silicone comes to mind.

A drop of Permatex Industrial Hydraulic sealer on the threads will do the trick. Its good for all fluid connections too.

I agree with the chromeing being at least part of the problem . It didn't leak before. Not sure about silicone. I will look into the hydro sealer as far as applications. I believe some of the panheads had a tapered plug, a little teflon would help a lot. My shovelhead has a copper washer and button head screw. Thanks

An 82 has Showa forks, which use a button head screw and copper washer. The screw isn't tapered like the earlier allen plug, used thru 76.

This is the product that was available. It seems like it doesn't have fibers or anything like that which is similar to the industrial sealer. Clean up is nice also. I guess I will be the Guinea pig ;)
