Vin Numbers

Question: Myself and the Blewcrap were on a mission to look at a 61 FL. On the way our disscussion was rather it was going to be a foot shift or a hand shift. My understanding was it had to be a hand shift because there was no F on the Vin, just FL. Blewcrap said he never seen an F on any Vin . Come to think it, niether had I. So question is, Why designate the F for foot shift . is it just for assembly at factory or was it ever on Vin. I did look in the knowledge base, couldn't find this subject.
PS: It was a foot shift.
