S&S steel pushrods

#1

Post by thebeast »

I’m using aluminum pushrods with solid tappets in my 49fl. Ive got a set of steel pushrods that Ive been wanting to try for the heck of it. Could one of you guys explain why the steels have a though hole on the tappet end and not the rocker arm end?
The aluminum may have the same, I don’t remember since the last time I changed the corks and adjusted them.
Thanks. James

I might drill out the rocker end. It may help with return oil from the head. Anyone ever try this?
Thanks, James

Don't drill it. The full spherical shape will help distribute lubrication on the ball, a hole will diminish it. They drain through the cylinders, not the pushrod tubes or pushrods.

Oil into the pushrod tube from the rocker arm, isn’t that how the early hydraulic lifters/pushrods got their oil to operate?

Yes, but it came from the rocker arm & was only to supply the hydrulic lifter unit at the TOP of the pushrod, not thru the push rod like Evos. What little oil leaked past the tip, was drained thru the roller tappets, lubing them. Don't drill the rocker end, you will lose oil pressure to the rockers, losing the ability to completely surround the rocker shaft with oil. Doc

Never considered the oil pressure issue. Thanks for the explanation.

I would expect that ball end of the pushrod to be hardened steel, and being spherical, quite difficult to get a drill bit centered and started. Let us know how this works out for you.... RooDog
