Good suggestion RooDog! I also think If I take all the inserts out, I may be able to confirm the rollers are installed correctly looking down inside without removing the tappet blocks. It sure acts like I installed them wrong Mike. I have time this week. Taking the wife to the Airport soon for a week in Southern California. Am I correct that the oil drains from the head down through the cylinders and NOT down the pushrod tubes on a 58? My service manual starts from roller motors through shovels. It's a bit confusing.

The HARLEY service mans show the oil returns down the drain holes in the cylinders. But also some splash flows down the pushrod tubes too, and if you look in the lifter blocks you should see a small hole, about 1/8", to vent this drainage. The negative pressure pulses in the crankcase as the pistons ascend and the breather valve closes draws the rocker/valve chamber oil down those channels in the cylinder to the bottom end, then as the pistons descend and the breather opens the oil in the CC is blown into the cam/gear case side of the engine. But we are only concerned here with pressurized oil feed to the lifters.

To update this thread. The oil problem to the lifters was due to installing the springs incorrectly in the bypass and check valve in the oil pump. swapped them around and it pumped up and returns oil well. I started this and adjusted the low speed needle and idle. Took it up to my buddies and went out for a spin. It shifts through all gears smooth and runs well. This is now up for sale. Has Clear title $15K.

You have done a nice job there. Using reconditioned parts and not spending money for eye wash was a smart move. You should have no problem selling it and the new owner can go broke on the foo-foo stuff...
Best wishes..... RooDog.....

A thing of Beauty. Question, was there no DuoGlide script on the fender that first year?

Yes, there should be. But without the register trade mark. Not sure what they did with police bikes or if they would have taken them off. Runs great without them!

I was so cool following your rebuild of this bike Panpal! After all that work, I don't know how you could sell that beauty.

On another note, take it to the Oley AMCA meet this weekend and I'm sure it would sell fast!

Thanks for the replies. It is hard to sell, but this was a investment to support my Panhead habit. If I kept it, I would continue buying the foo-foo for it as Roo says. My long time friend who is still recovering from a long hospital stay made this resurrection possible. Not many friends will hand you 58 tanks, badges, black bubble bags, a speedometer, footboards, a good star hub wheel and build a motor with me and have all the replacement parts on hand. The bike is now at his house and its possible it will make the trip to Oley, but one of the drivers decided he wasn't going to pull a trailer, so it may not make the trip. I did help him prep his load and know there will be a nice complete Excelsior motor, frame (s), tank (s), wheels, bars, fenders, front end and more as well as a 33 VLD motor and a shit load of totes packed with who knows what there. Sounds like a great swap meet. Time for me to get my 50 bastard child bike done. It's not going anywhere. Haven't started it in over a year now and she's puking a belly full of oil out. Never heard a pan burp and fart this way when kicking it. Finally pulled the plugs to pump it out faster last night. bad gas in it also I'm sure. I need to replace the single plunger rear banana caliper set up with something easier to deal with that doesn't lock up and smoke when I pull in the shop from a loop around the block.
