1965 mousetrap

#1

Post by Roadster_G »

I recently purchased a 1965 Panhead, already posted about exhaust pipe problem.
I noticed in the parts book I have that the bell crank has a different part number, the one with 2 holes 38475-65 versus the 1 hole bell crank38472-52, correct?
Anything else different on the 65 mousetrap setup?
Is it possible to use the earlier one due to the primary without too much modification? I have a good one from my 59 (be awhile on that one) that I could use short term.

I am going towards a stock bike and as you can see I have a long way to go, many 1 year parts.
thanks
Greg

It is true that 65, 66, and 67's used a different bellcrank than 52-64's did, but keep in mind that 65-67's used a different clutch arm. I don't know why early and late mouse traps couldn't interchange by just raising or lowering the mounting location on the frame....bosheff

Keep in mind also that you more than likely are using a -68 clutch arm on your 65 as it presently sits. This will not work with a mousetrap as it is a much shorter piece than the -36 arm or the -65 arm. There were also early clutch arms that had 2 holes vs the conventional 1 hole arms. Good luck finding the 65-67 arm....bosheff

There is a clutch arm on eBay right now,

The mousetrap hole location is not just about height, but also length of pull due to the shorter clutch release arm to maintain the same travel.
You also need the correct oil tank for your bike Roadster_G.

Thanks for the info. I was never into restoring past bikes, just using what looked good and improved performance etc...
New ball game when going back to stock configuration. Interesting stuff. The hunt is pretty cool.

There is an upcoming AMCA event in nearby Dixon, CA next month, swap meet. I just joined the local chapter.
I need to find someone with a stock 65 near me to get to know.

Anyway, thanks again for the answers, I am sure I will have other questions.

I am planning on going as well to the Dixon meet. I am down in Castro Valley.

I think the skinny release rod is different for '65. I have one with a dog leg bend in my swap junk and figure that's what it should fit, 65-67. It bends in and around the square area on the aluminum primaries. If I can find it I'll post a pic.

I am finding a few different ones. 36918-65 is one I assume is for the 65. 19.75"
I would be interested in seeing what the bent one looks like.
thanks
