Police shifter with a ratchet top? New to me, please enlighten. 1965 was the last year for the gate mounted to the tanks, from then on the gate was bolted to the frame but used the jock-top.

Most frame mount police shifters I've seen don't have a gate on the tank. But if you have some combination that does, changing the effective length of the shifter arm, either on the trans or the shifter itself will shorten or lengthen the throw needed to change gears.

My 2 cents

You need a shifter gate on that cop shifter with a plain slot and no notches. Ratchet tops shift and return to the same location, hand shift tops do not. You have the wrong combination of parts...
No factory hand shift used a ratchet top, ever...

Several of the aftermarket suppliers sell a replacement gate for use with a ratchet top. I have one on my 38U chop and have used it with both a 4 speed ratchet top and the 5 speed that is in it now. It is just a chrome plate that screws on the shifter mount and could easily be fabricated.

Old post, BUT: 1970 frame,5 gal fatbobs, ratchet top tranny, police shifter: Everything works and shifts fine. You just need the correct drum cover on the ratchet top that the shifter rod attaches to, easy day................
