Post by jerryd »

Hi I need to fix the stripped fill plug on my kick cover, understand it is 7/8 x 18. does any one have this size of helicoil? Or if you have a part kit can I buy a coil and rent your drill bit? I have not found any on line yet. thanks for your help, jerry

Colony Machine makes an oversized plug, looks like original. I'd try one of them first.
Several options, check here:

Thanks for the reply. Is there any success stories , or tips in doing the oversize plug? The threads are completely gone for the first half an inch.

I have used the over size plugs, however when the threads are gone you need to weld, drill, tap, I have also done this.

Well here is how it worked out. First I found a tap and heli coil 7/8 x 18 this through a tractor dealership. They use one loaner from Napa. Some old tractor spark plugs are 7/8 x 18 they repair occasionally. Then I went to my neighbour machinist and left it with him. There was no threads left in the fill hole so when he tried to thread the hole it was so wore big the heli coil tap just chewed and would not thread. So next solution was to weld some material into the hole. His welder just comes occasionally and was not available. So he set it up bored as big as he dared , turned an aluminum bush, pressed it in with locktite 620 and threaded it for 3/4 x15 tpi. Then took a piece of hex stock and made a plug completed with o ring. Best part 30 dollars Canadian!!!!. at 3/4 hole and 30 bucks i can get oil in

I've fixed a few stripped fill plug holes doing the exact same thing by boring the cover, pressing in a threaded bushing and then I drill and press in a 1/8"steel pin thru the threads to lock it further. I've also turned cracked kicker bosses and then I shrink a steel ring (made from an old forktube) reinforcing it. A lot of otherwise junk kicker covers can be salvaged.
