Front Brake Tube
what do you guys with bobbers do with the front brake cable guide tube that fits into the backing plate when you can't restrain the top of the tube to the front fender?
seems like a lot of leverage on the bottom fixing, I was thinking of either cutting the tube down to say 1/2 length or better still, cutting off flare at bottom of tube and removing completely. Then tapping thread into now vacant hole of bottom retaining nut and screwing adjuster directly into nut.
whaddya think?

Re: Front Brake Tube
As a machinist I think your idea of replacing the nut with a custom made part might be best. A piece of stainless bar maybe 2 inches long with the backing plate thread on the outside, a hole thru and a female thread for the adjuster would be clean looking and rigid. Mill two flats on the outside to tighten into the backing plate.
Then no original parts are changed and set the tube/nut assembly on the shelf for the future if you want to go back to original.
my 2 cents

Re: Front Brake Tube
I've seen them cut down before. I think I have one somewhere that's been cut down. If you go that route, let me know- I have no use for the shortened tube.

Re: Front Brake Tube
thanks for that, at least i'm thinking in the right direction, does anyone know off the top of their head what the tread size is going into the backing plate? 1'm thinking 1/2" UNF.
Thanks for the offer bigincher but I'm in UK and postage costs from US + tax this side, admin' charges etc makes things prohibitive.

Re: Front Brake Tube
3/8" and 5/16" brake tube soldered together. Inverted flare nut on the small end, Harley cable adjuster on the big end. Anchored to lower leg with Tywraps.

Re: Front Brake Tube
hate it when you're looking for information and the a topic isn't brought to a conclusion so here goes following on with the advice given . Made up in aircraft grade ali' , just cus the machinest had some knocking about and internally threaded for adjuster. If it proves not to be man enough for the job then MKII version will be in stainless.

Re: Front Brake Tube
With that short piece (very nice work) just be sure to add a cable guide somewhere to keep the cable out of the wheel. Things at 70 aren't like sitting in the driveway..

Re: Front Brake Tube
I just got a flat piece of stock, be it what was handy, drilled a hole to match the bottom mount hole on the bottom tree, pushed it out say two inches, and clamped the cable on the other end, with whatever was handy.
But I digress, all solutions proffered, are fine solutions, some even stellar. But I am just a simple tractor builder.
